CIPD South East Wales Pilot Mentoring Scheme

Together with Jan Hill (my fellow Co-Founder of The Corporate Coaching Partnership) I have just returned from an enjoyable event where we were guests of the CIPD in Cardiff.  We were invited to contribute our expertise to assist with the  creation of a pilot Mentoring Scheme for Members.  It was a great joy to be invited to join HR professionals from a variety of occupational backgrounds and lend our weight to the development of this project.

"Your Time Magazine"

I am delighted to be working with "Your Time" magazine writing a series of features on lifestyle and well-being issues.  "Your Time" is published by Deep Red Designs and is aimed at the active over 50s.  Within its pages I will be exploring how coaching can offer new approaches and perspectives to help put an end to old problems and how its principles can be applied to the issues that affect us all as we grow older.  (March 2008)

Summer 2007

THANKS TO JEREMY!

It is eight years ago since I first embarked on my journey to becoming a professional Life Coach.  Back in April 2000 I read an article in a magazine about Jeremy Lazarus who’d had a radical change of direction himself to become a coach.  Without taking a minute to think, I telephoned Jeremy on the number given in the article and blurted out something like “You’re doing what I want to do, can you give me any advice?”

Jeremy was very patient, and generous with his time.  He gave me the advice I needed and much more.  He gave me inspiration!

Last year, I had the opportunity to write a public “thank you” to Jeremy, within the pages of the same magazine, for picking up the phone that day and setting me on my way.

You can imagine my surprise and delight, a few days after my article was published, when the telephone rang and I found myself speaking once again to Jeremy.  He had phoned to congratulate me and thank me for my thanks!  Although I have often thought of him and his impact on my life in the intervening seven years, I had never spoken to him again and it was wonderful, at last, to say my “thank you” in person.

JUST WHAT IS BLUE SKY “WALK AND TALK” COACHING?

One of my Mum's favourite mantras when I was growing up was “A change is as good as a rest”.  When I got stuck on a piece of homework, and was struggling against the heat of one of the hottest ever summers to make sense of exam revision notes, her cheerful voice would break through my gloom urging me to “get up, move about, go for a short walk and you’ll come back to it refreshed”

Many years later while studying for the Diploma in Coaching Course at the Iron Mill Institute in Exeter and what do I hear?  I hear about unblocking techniques to help clients create change or movement one area of their life by first designing change and movement in another, where it may be easier to do so, and then watching for the “snowball” effect of the resulting momentum.

So, this was how the idea of “walk and talk” sessions with clients was born.  The advantages of taking a break from routine, creating movement, getting exercise, fresh air, and getting one-to-one coaching are all combined in one activity.

Many clients find they are energised or inspired by a change of scene or routine and more free-thinking when they are outdoors, others just want an opportunity to contribute to their 10,000 steps rather than sitting in another chair for an hour.

But if all this sounds just too energetic, don’t worry.  There are plenty of relaxing and enjoyable venues to choose from where coaching sessions over a cup or two of coffee are just as inspiring, uninterrupted, and completely confidential.
